When we put on the Hero of Time’s legendary green tunic, we’re used to experiencing his adventure in third-person view. A new update for the Switch game allows fans to enjoy The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in first-person, but you’re not supposed to actually play the whole game like that. VR mode is primarily there for you to stop and appreciate the scenery every once in a while. It was only a matter of time before tinkerers took that first-person functionality to a whole other level, though.
Unlike the official VR mode, Breath of the Wild running on the CEMU emulator on PC can maintain a steady 60 frames per second at whatever resolution your machine can handle. The whole game is playable in this first-person state, too.
The mod can be enjoyed on the Wii U (which has had modding for a long while) and the Switch (which requires booting into custom firmware via homebrew), though both options take serious configuring. You’ll also note that battles automatically take Link back into third-person, though the mod allows you to snap back into first-person during action sequences, depending on your preference.
According to the mod description page, this tweak comes in three flavors:
DefaultFOV is the regular and recommended FOV for both VR and PC users.
WiderFOV allows to see more around you. It feels really good in VR but it tends to make objects in the distance more pixellated than the other options.
NarrowerFOV allows to see less around you. It allows the game to be less pixelated in VR, but can sometimes feel weird. It works best for PC users.
