Destiny 2’s Iron Banner kicked off today, bringing back the competitive multiplayer event from the original Destiny. Bungie’s return to Iron Banner has at least one very fun Easter egg in the form of a shoutout to fellow Battle.net title Overwatch.
Wayne Ng was playing Iron Banner in Destiny 2 today — and playing quite well — when he noticed an obvious reference to Overwatch’s moodiest bad guy, Reaper. Ng says he pulled off a 20-player kill streak and was greeted with the following extended voice line from announcer Lord Saladin.
The Easter egg starts about 15 seconds into the YouTube video below:
If you can’t quite make that out, here’s what Saladin says: “Die! Die! Di-*cough* Sorry I’ve been watching too many Iron Banner matches. What time is it? Shaxx? Shaxx, are you there? Can you get me a water? Stop yelling, it’s just a question. I’m not old!”
Overwatch and Destiny 2 are connected thanks to parent company Activision Blizzard and the fact that both games will be on Blizzard’s Battle.net service on PC. They also have a connection in their voice actors: Keith Ferguson performs the characters of Overwatch’s Reaper and Destiny’s Lord Saladin.
Thanks to Ng for capturing this moment, because based on my Iron Banner performance so far this morning, there’s no way I was going to hear this voice line firsthand.
