Marvel may have its best movie villain in Thor: Ragnarok’s Hela

Spread the word!

Cate Blanchett’s Hela is more than a standard villain in a Marvel movie.

Hela is the first female villain that Marvel has ever had in its cinematic universe, as pointed out by director Taika Waititi in the clip above. She’s dangerous, but cunning; evil, but likable. She feels akin to Thor’s mischievous brother, Loki, reigning over the city of Asgard by inducing fear in its citizens. Even though we know they’re evil, we can’t help but be charmed by their on-screen presence, rooting for their wickedness against Thor’s good deeds.

“I think the best villains are always those that you kind of love and hate what you do, but you sort of understand them,” Blanchett says in the clip. “There’s some logic to it.”

Marvel’s new featurette on Hela, which can be seen above, features Blanchett’s enchanting villain in yet-to-be-seen clips. We see Hela up against Thor and Loki after the two have left Sakaar and returned to Asgard. The end of the clip also features a fantastic look at Hela in combat, which was Blanchett’s favorite part of filming.

Thor: Ragnarok will be released on Nov. 3.
